Recently, Gecko joined colleagues from across QLD in roundtables with the Minister for Environment and QLD environment groups.
Gecko’s Campaign Coordinator, Sara Hicks, met with Minister Leanne Linard MP to discuss local issues on water, cultural engagement, koala conservation and state infrastructure projects and adapting to heat and hazards in our region. The Minister of Environment’s Roundtable involves robust and nuanced discussions where regional conservation groups bring forward issues and changes needed on local and statewide policy. A wide range of topics is often covered, including managing protected areas, tourism, conservation of threatened species, deforestation, rolling out renewables with benefits for nature and communities, and more.
In collaboration with eight other Queensland regional conservation groups, we presented our brief on protecting Queenslanders from Heat and Hazards to Premier
Steven Miles. We were also joined by Minister for Tourism Michael Healy and senior staff in the Department of Environment, Science and Innovation and Department of Energy and Climate Change.
Gecko comes away from this genuine engagement with the government with more shared knowledge, inspiration and affirmation of the vital efforts of people and groups around the state. We’re here to listen and learn with you about the local issues and ensure there are ongoing ways to advocate to the Queensland Government and decision-makers so that we can keep evolving policy and better outcomes for our environment and communities.
After the days with the Queensland Government, Gecko met with dozens of South East Queensland environment groups alongside our Queensland regional colleagues for further workshops, discussions, and knowledge sharing. So many fantastic initiatives are happening!
