Last week a group of locals had the opportunity to get an update on the progress of the Currumbin Eco Park. The Queensland Department of Economic Development had invited members of Gecko Environment Council and Friends of Currumbin to an information session and brief walk up into the Blackbutt forest.
David Jinks from Gold Coast Botany enthusiastically told us about the 16 rare and threatened species found and that 25% of all endemic plants of the Gold Coast are represented on this site.
Damien White of DDW Fauna consultancy told us that the site had representatives of 20% of Gold Coast fauna, including koalas, gliders, birds, reptiles and insects. Having identified the species, the work continues to remove the many weeds and allow for natural regeneration. A tender has gone out for a company to undertake this work.
Another walk-through is planned for autumn 2025.
