Seeking a Sustainable Future.
With concern for the health of our natural environment growing, the race is on to find practical and achievable solutions. Four students from Bond University have taken on the challenge of understanding what motivates people to adopt sustainable behaviour and what the obstacles are to this goal. Their study of a range of approaches to modifying human behaviour stem from a disciplines such as economics, psychology and education and will form the basis of a free presentation to the public at Gecko House at 6pm on Wednesday 11th April.
In their presentation, the students will explore some of the real and perceived obstacles to the adoption of sustainability in the home, schoolyard, workplace as well as the general community. Using case studies, they will present a range of strategies that have been shown to be effective in driving the necessary change, with consideration given to a variety of lifestyles and environments.
Lois Levy, President of Gecko said, “Most people know what they need to do to live more sustainable lives that will reduce the human footprint on our planet, however moving from knowing to doing is another challenge. We look forward to the insights that Charlotte Walsh, Bridgette McDougall, Tayla Howard and Madelaine Waters can give us on this vexing issue.”
The students research for their presentation have included factors such as time, culture, costs and geography which they found create obstacles that can get in the way of even the most devout environmentalist’s enthusiasm and commitment to achieving change.
The four students are in their final year of studying for a degree in Environmental Management and specializing in Sustainability Science. They are seeking practical solutions to achieve a more sustainable future.
The presentation is free to the public and all are welcome. It is hoped the presentation will also be streamed live to the internet, a first for Gecko presentations, to make such knowledge more accessible to more people.
