Gecko Talks – Seedling or Weedling?

Expand the Bush by Knowing the Difference

Gecko Talks – September 25th at Currumbin RSL

Many Gold Coasters volunteer  their time conducting bush regeneration and removing environmental weeds to allow endemic species to flourish naturally. However, identifying the seedlings from the weedlings can be challenging.

If you are keen to learn how to spot native seedlings and their imposters, then this is the talk for you.

Rusty Linnane, a local experienced bush regenerator with a passion for seedlings and passing on his knowledge, has created a Seedling versus Weedling workshop and will bring this informative discussion, with a native tube stock ‘show and tell’, to Gecko Talks on Wednesday September 25.

This keen Gecko volunteer says it can be confusing for even experienced regenerators as some environmental weeds look very similar to natives at seedling stage. For instance, can you spot the difference between a young Camphor Laurel and native Laurel species?

Bush Regeneration’s goal is to increase forest canopy cover and overall biodiversity. The golden rule is:If in doubt, ‘don’t pull it out’. Accidental removal of a specimen could result in losing the opportunity to have that species on your site. ‘Let them grow a little,’ he says. ‘In a few weeks or months, they will be easier to identify, plus you’ve not lost a possible rare or threatened plant.

It’s not a race. After all, it takes years for the Camphor Laurel to set seed.’

This workshop will assist you to correctly identify similar-looking weeds and native seedlings to help you remove environmental weeds more easily.

Rusty believes we all benefit by knowing what we’re looking at when we walk in nature. It helps bring the bush alive for us, even when the birds are quiet.
