Currumbin Estuary Master Plan Community Meeting

Do we need a Master Plan for Currumbin Estuary Parklands?

Many locals think we do, so we invite you to a public meeting on 7th March at Palm Beach Sports Club to hear all about the benefits of a master plan.

Currumbin Estuary is a place of exceptional beauty, loved by many, so it is important that it is protected while still being enjoyed by all.

Gecko and several other local community organisations have become aware of a variety of projects, either underway or planned, by Gold Coast City Council, Dept. of Main Roads, and Gold Coast Waterways Authority for Currumbin Estuary.

The overall aim of these projects is to improve the public enjoyment of the parklands and waterways, but there does not appear to be any coordination between the projects, and we have concerns that one project may have impacts on another. For this reason, the groups listed below are calling on the Council to undertake a master plan for the Estuary, which will coordinate the projects and to ensure environmentally sustainable active transport linkages for the whole estuary, protection of natural landscape amenity, and linkages for flora and fauna.

A master plan is a dynamic, long-term planning document that provides a layout to guide the future development of an area, such as the Estuary from Currumbin Rock in the east to Wendt’s bridge in the west. The plan would be based on extensive community consultation of the social, environmental, and economic values important to residents and visitors to the area.

We have a good example of a working master plan with The Spit Master Plan which outlines the assets of each precinct and what is needed to achieve protection and accessibility of these areas. The Spit Master Plan was developed over 18 months of an extensive consultation process called enquiry by design. The same process was used for the Currumbin Eco Park, and we would like the same for The Estuary.
