Speakers: Brett Bradley
Organisation: Sea Shepherd
Without the forward-thinking fearlessness of direct-action campaigners, complex ecosystems like the oceans would be at risk of even greater exploitation from those corporations, industries and governments that prioritise financial gain above all else. Activists like Brett Bradley – Gecko’s guest speaker for July – are on the front-line in environmental campaigns, working tirelessly in challenging conditions and often putting their own lives at risk in order to document and expose habitat destruction and the brutal slaughter of wild animals.
In recent years Brett has found himself defending marine turtle against poachers as an activist for Sea Shepherd. He was drawn to the organisation for their hands-on approach to conservation and joined them in 2010 as an on-shore volunteer. He has since been a part of five major campaigns and now works as the Education Coordinator for Sea Shepherd Brisbane. He believes in the importance of awareness and direct action, and is here tonight to further educate the community about the international operations of Sea Shepherd, the world’s leading direct-action ocean conservation group.
Hear Brett explain what it really means to “Defend, Conserve and Protect” our oceans, and learn about one of the latest Sea Shepherd campaigns that is particularly close to his heart. “Operation Jairo” is being relaunched this year in a bid to protect endangered populations of green, leatherback, hawksbill and loggerhead turtles in iconic but threatened turtle nesting habitats in Florida, Costa Rica and Honduras. Come along and let Brett inspire you to take part in direct action yourself!
