24th February 2016 – Wild Bird Rescues Gold Coast

Organisation: Wild Bird Rescues Gold Coast

The abundant waterways and the popularity of fishing on the Gold Coast mean that entanglements of birds is a common occurrence, and therefore, a huge problem. Wild Bird Rescues specialises in catching ‘flight capable’ birds that have typically become hooked or entangled in fishing line. Catching a flight capable bird presents a unique challenge, and their rescue is often difficult and time consuming.

Since 2005, Rowley Goonan of Wild Bird Rescues has provided a free rescue service for injured native birds on the Gold Coast. During that time thousands of wild birds that would otherwise have suffered a miserable death, or been left seriously injured, got the help they needed. While conducting wildlife rescue work in 2015, Rowley took more than 1500 phone calls; drove 25,000 kilometres, attended 471 rescues and caught hundreds of sick, injured or orphaned birds.

During this free presentation, Rowley will talk about his rescue work over the past decade, including pictures and a demonstration of capture techniques for ‘flight capable’ birds. If you’d like to learn more about this valuable work, please come along!
