Gecko Talks-Eco Village Celebrates 15 years Existence

Currumbin's EcoVillage celebrates 15 years of Living in Harmony with Nature

Co-Founder Kerry Shepherd speaks at Gecko Talks on 25 November at Currumbin RSL

The Ecovillage in Currumbin celebrates its 15th birthday, however co-founder Kerry Shepherd was already involved 8 years before the first residents moved in. Kerry and her late husband Chris Walton created a blue print for a village where humans and nature could exist in harmony. The developers faced many difficulties and worked closely with council officers to enable regulatory changes that transformed a dis-used dairy farm into a residential village, not to mention the Global Financial Crisis in 2008.

Kerry will share how power, water, social and biodiversity were hot issues and how she and Chris overcame those challenges. “One of the reasons that we wanted to start an ecovillage was to live sustainably ourselves in a community”, says Kerry. “We identified that change needed to happen in the development industry and wanted to lead with an example of human co-existence with nature.” At present all lots have been sold and about 470 residents call the Ecovillage their home.

The Ecovillage in Currumbin is a modern international award-winning sustainable community located in south-east Queensland, Australia. The 270 acre site is set in Currumbin Valley, just 7 minutes from beautiful Currumbin Beach. The village contains over 20 different types of community facilities, including a community hall, kitchen, large pizza oven, bali huts, playgrounds, oval and cafe. It is also home to some 65 resident kangaroos and numerous other Australian wildlife.

Gecko Talks is on Wednesday, November 25 at Currumbin RSL.
