Sustainable Business Directory
Every dollar we spend represents a choice, and those choices cumulatively determine what appears in the marketplace. Corporations producing goods or providing services will respond to increased demand for sustainable products, and likewise, will respond to declining demand for products that harm our environment, workers, or communities.
The aim of this Directory is two-fold:
- To make it easier for conscious consumers to connect with local sustainable businesses offering earth friendly, socially responsible, and health oriented goods and services.
- To inspire and encourage local businesses to become more sustainable.
WHAT IS A SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS?
A sustainable business is an enterprise that has minimal negative impact on the global or local environment, community, society, or economy—a business that strives to meet the triple bottom line of people, planet and profit, rather than just making a profit at any cost. (Wikipedia)
Why is it important for your business to be sustainable?
For your business to be sustainable it helps to follow the principles of sustainable development. According to the World Council for Economic Development (WCED), sustainable development is development that, – “Meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”
If you are not incorporating sustainability into your business operations, you could be polluting the environment, impacting negatively on local communities and being inefficient by consuming more resources than you need, which costs more in the long run. In fact, Businesses that have adopted sustainability principles have been shown to be more profitable.
A movement is growing worldwide, where consumers are seeking products and services that demonstrate a commitment to environmental and social responsibility.
The aim of this directory is two-fold:
