SUMMARY:Gecko Talks-23 September; Whale Births Boom in Gold Coast Bay
DESCRIPTION:Gecko Talks-Whale Births Boom in Gold Coast Bay – 23 September in Currumbin RSL\nMore whales with newborns were recorded in our Gold Coast waters than ever, according to Dr Olaf Meynecke, Griffith University marine scientist and whale researcher.\nThis is just one reason why he is a passionate advocate for the health of our ocean—particularly what he terms Gold Coast Bay—and its importance for us and our local economy.\nDr Meynecke was instrumental in the recent declaration of the Gold Coast Bay as a ‘Mission Blue Hope Spot’. Mission Blue is an international body founded by pre-eminent oceanographer, Dr Sylvia Earle, who many would have seen on the recent ABC TV series, Australia’s Ocean Odyssey.\nDr Meynecke will explain the significance of being a Hot Spot, and take us on a deep-dive to the Bay’s rocky reefs and impressive diversity of sea life, including whales, dolphins, turtles and rays, when he is guest speaker at Gecko Talks on Wednesday, September 23.\nAs the Hope Spot Champion, he and his partner-groups, including Gecko Environment Council, are seeking unified conservation, boating and fishing regulations to protect not only whales but a strong ecotourism industry that prioritises animal safety and public appreciation of the natural world.\nHear about the richness of our underwater world and why we should see it as part of the city, and its health as part of any Gold Coast plan, integrating the above and below-water areas.\nGecko Talk is on Wednesday, September 23 at Currumbin RSL. The event is co-hosted by Humpbacks and High-rises, a Gold Coast based NGO. Everyone’s welcome and it’s free.\nBUT to comply with Covid-Safe rules, you must book.\nCome early and buy a delicious RSL meal.\nBookings should be made online at\nwww.eventbrite.com.au/e/gecko-talk-whale-births-boom-in-gold-coast-bay-tickets-119964379689\nWhen:  Wednesday, 23 September 2020Time:     6:45PM for 7:00PM StartWhere:  Currumbin RSL, 165 Duringan Street, Currumbin\n                   (Check signs to the room)Cost:       FREE!
