About the library:
Gecko’s environmental resource library is the place to find all the information you need on a wide range of topics, such as home vegetable growing and sustainable gardens, genetically engineered crops, weeds of the Gold Coast, energy efficient housing, climate change and renewable energy.
There are approximately:
- 200 items in the Reports collection of the Library
- 250 items in Reference (in house use only)
- 450 items in the general library collection, ie. Books, and
- 220 files containing newspaper clippings etc. in the Vertical File collection.
The library also has a small audiovisual collection, a growing environmental education area (including Primary school education kits), many posters and a variety of newsletters and journals including Australian Geographic and G Magazine (the Green Lifestyle magazine).
The library even has a small Junior collection with both fiction and non-fiction books.
The collection continues to grow as new material is received and added into the library’s computer catalogue by volunteer staff.
The library is located on the ground floor of Gecko House. Students, teachers, environmentalists and members of the public are most welcome to visit and browse the library for environmental information during Gecko’s office hours of 10am – 3pm, Monday – Friday.
At present, a volunteer librarian is available each Thursday between 10am and 3pm to assist with your enquiries.
A photocopier is available for a small charge.
Members of Gecko may record their loan with the library and borrow materials. The procedure for borrowing is displayed on the library desk or check with office or library staff.
Vertical Files
Media sources, predominantly local papers, are scanned each week for items of environmental interest and relevant items are clipped and added to the Vertical File collection in the library.
Within these files there is a wealth of information. There are around 220 files covering a diverse range of environmental issues – some examples are: coastal ecology, dugongs, energy conservation, forest ecology, national parks, recycling and wetlands. Contained in each individual file are information booklets, brochures, pamphlets, permits, fact sheets and a large number of media clippings.
To ensure access for all, these files may not be borrowed, but information can be read or photocopied on the premises.
At the present time, the best day to access the vertical files resource is Tuesday morning, as that is the time our volunteers can best be of assistance.
