CLEAN UP AUSTRALIAN DAY A SUCESS ON THE GOLD COAST
Clean Up Australia Day 2012 was a huge success both locally and nationally, with the weather holding up in the Gold Coast region to allow more than a thousand volunteers to get their hands dirty.
The number of participants increased again this year with 84 Community sites, 12 Business sites, 30 School sites and 11 Youth sites registered. In addition, 518 volunteers pre-registered on the website to help out at those and many more turning up on the day.
In addition to the hundreds of bags of rubbish; volunteers also found shopping trolleys, tyres, mattresses, electrical goods and other large items dumped in our parks & waterways.
The Gold Coast and Hinterland Environment Council (Gecko) has coordinated Clean Up Australia Day for the past 10 years and Vice President, Dereka Ogden said:
“While it is wonderful that more people were involved in the clean up this year, it would be great if people were aware of the huge negative effects of un-
biodegradable plastic on marine life and take steps to dispose of plastic correctly so it does not enter our waterways.”
Australia wide an estimated 591,400 volunteers removed a staggering 16,199
tonnes of rubbish from 7363 Clean Up Sites across the country.
Ian Kiernan, Clean Up Australia, Gecko, and the Gold Coast City Council would like to thank all the hard working volunteers and supporters who have made the 22nd Clean Up Australia Day a successful one.
